The year is 2000. Everything is translucent sparkle and we are clamdiggers deep in the ‘brick’ cellphone era. But for me, I was a 9 year old girl growing up on Sanibel Island with my mom, step-dad and baby brother. My biological father was a fashion designer in New York City, the place of my physical birth.
This was also the year that Rob Thomas of Matchbox Twenty took home three Grammy’s at the 42nd annual awards. One of those awards was for Record of the Year for his song “Smooth” with the legendary Carlos Santana. This was well before I had social media (yes, I do remember dial up internet) so it wasn’t until much later I was able to see pictures of this spectacular, glisening, custom-made suit… hand made by my father. SO COOL.
Fast forward to 2019. I had just started at 104.7 The Mix WSGL in Bonita Springs, Florida when my PD said, “we have a special guest stopping by today but we can’t tell anyone until after he’s gone…” This is what radio DJs live for… and free break room food. About an hour before his arrival, I heard he was just going to swing by on his way to a scheduled gig at a swanky, private Naples event. He was in my studio long enough for me to tell him that the clothes he wore to the 2000 Grammy Awards were made by my father. I didn’t cry! But, I was obviously starstruck. Dad has been gone 9 years this February and I hope he knows the 2000 fashion is BACK!
